At UC Santa Barbara, the Love Lab is a group that works on marine fishes. Their "Fish List" is a fantastic check-list of Pacific Coast fish species. This server is a web-based phylogenetic tree which gives information about biodiversity and the relationships between different groups of organisms. This server contains over 25,000 citations on the genetic variation in natural populations of fish and other organisms.
REGIS is a regional environmental planning project at the University of California, Berkeley. It provides a vast quantity of information on the San Francisco Bay Area in the form of a large, web-based GIS system. This database allows the user to search for geographic features (ie. mountains, caves, streams) within the USA by state and county. It returns latitude and longitude, the relevant USGS Topographic Maps, and simple area maps produced from the US Census Bureau Tiger Map Server. This site provides information on the department's operations, including environmental research, planning, the Snow Survey, the California Water Project, and other areas. CERES is a product of the California Resource Agency. It allows you to search for information by geographic area, organization, theme, or keyword. CERES is a database of links to agency environmental data servers (WWW, Gopher, ftp). This server has a huge amount of data on environmental (water quality, biological, and meteorological) conditions in the estuary. Official information on pending California legislation and current California law maintained by the Legislative Counsel of California. This server also includes general information on California's laws, legislative process, and the Legislature. The mission of the Commission, as the lead agency responsible for carrying out California's coastal management program, is to plan for and regulate development in the coastal zone consistent with the policies of the California Coastal Act .
Maintained by the UC California Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program, includes over 200 links to information related to California Fisheries. The FAO is the largest specialized organization within the United Nations, it's fisheries statistics are the most widely used in the world. They also have an on-line database of aquatic organism introductions. Streamnet is a collaborative project among Pacific Northwest agencies and Indian tribes providing information concerning the region's aquatic resources. This is the Nature Conservancy's conservation science page. The mission of The Nature Conservancy is stated as: "preserving habitats and species by buying the lands and waters they need to survive". The mission of the California Native Plant Society is to increase understanding and appreciation of California's native plants, and to preserve them in their natural habitat through scientific activities, education, and conservation. This server has information on all member field stations, including facilities, contact information, and the local environment.
The Bodega Marine Laboratory has an ongoing exchange program with the Institute of Marine Biology and the Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry both of which are in Vladivostok, Russia and are Institutes of the Far Eastern Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The NAML server is a good starting point for information on American marine laboratories. From the NAML homepage you can access the various regional chapters and then go to the individual institution's homepages. University of Washington's marine laboratory on San Juan Island, Washington. Oregon State University's marine science center on Yaquina Bay estuary in Newport, Oregon. Stanford University's marine station on Monterey Bay in Pacific Grove, California. The California State University's marine laboratory on Monterey Bay and Elkhorn Slough in Moss Landing, California. The University of Oregon's marine laboratory located on Coos Bay in Charleston, Oregon. San Francisco State University's Environmental Studies Center in Tiburon, Marin County, California. University of California, San Diego located in La Jolla, California. This server includes a definitive guide to "Oceanography on the Net", providing links to information and data on all aspects of oceanography. In their own words, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is: "America's largest independent, not-for-profit, oceanographic research institution." Their WWW server contains a large and diverse collection of oceanographic data, especially pertaining to the US Atlantic coast. A related institution is the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) one of America's oldest and most respected research laboratories.
