Computer Security Requirements
PC and Mac users, you are required to register your MAC address (Media Access Control address) with BML IT before using BML network services. Please follow the appropriate instructions on how to find your computer MAC address.
Any device connected to the BML network must comply with computer security standards (below). Any noncompliant computers will risk being disconnected from the BML LAN.
Please reference the UC Davis Cyber-Safety for more information.
Your computer must meet the minimum security standards, including:
- Current anti-virus software and a clean report
- Active firewalls
If your computer doesn't meet the standards:
Ask BML IT to install the necessary software.
OR
Get department approval to install the software yourself.
Follow these steps:
- Remove any anti-virus software from your computer.
- Install sophos anti-virus software, free for UCD users.
- Update the software regularly (at least daily).
- Install/Activate the appropriate firewall software.
- Regularly check for updates to your operating system.
Windows users can set their computers to download operating system updates on a regular basis. Look in Settings ->Control Panel and find System or Automatic Updates. You can also find Windows updates in the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, or by visiting Microsoft's Web site at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.
Mac users should also regularly apply operating system updates to their computers. Mac OS X users can consult the "software update" option under the apple menu items to manually or automatically schedule updates.
