BML Minimum Computer Security Requirements

Any device connected to the BML network must comply with computer security standards (below). Any noncompliant computers will risk being disconnected.

Please reference the UC Davis Cyber Safety Program website for more information.

Your computer must meet the minimum security standards, including:

  • Current anti-virus software and a clean report
  • Active firewalls

If your computer doesn't meet the standards:

Ask your desktop support person to install the necessary software.

OR

Get department approval to install the software yourself.

Follow these steps:

  • Remove any anti-virus software from your computer.
  • Install symantec anti-virus software, free for UCD users.
  • Update the software regularly (at least daily).
  • Install/Activate the appropriate firewall software.
  • Regularly check for updates to your operating system.
Windows users can set their computers to download operating system updates on a regular basis. Look in your Control Panel and find System or Automatic Updates. You can also find Windows updates in the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, or by visiting Microsoft's Web site at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.

Although updates are required less frequently on Macs than on Windows, Mac users should still regularly update their computers. Mac OS X users can consult the "software update" pane in the System Preferences utility to manually or automatically schedule updates.

Note: If you are on the UCD campus and do not have access to BML IT support, you can get technical help from UCD IT Express.
